Discovery Health remains the largest open scheme in South Africa with 2.8 million principal members. It also remains the most expensive. Whether that premium is worth paying comes down to one question: will you actually engage with Vitality?

01

Pricing across the plan range

KeyCare Plus (entry hospital plan) starts at R1,840/month. Classic Smart sits at R3,280, and Classic Comprehensive — the flagship — runs R7,460/month for a single adult.

Year-on-year contribution increases averaged 11.4% across the Discovery range in 2026, above the open-scheme median of 10.4%.

02

Hospital network

Discovery's network is the broadest in the country: 230+ hospitals and over 4,800 designated service providers. Even rural and small-town members can usually find an in-network option within 30 minutes.

03

Vitality: where the value lives or dies

For engaged members, Vitality offsets 15–22% of premium through grocery, fuel, gym and travel rewards. For members who don't engage, that offset evaporates — leaving Discovery as a premium-priced scheme without the discount.

04

Editorial verdict

Discovery is the right answer for households who'll use Vitality weekly, need broad network reach (frequent travellers, families with complex chronic profiles), or prioritise the best app experience in the market. For everyone else, Momentum or Bonitas usually offers better real value.
