How we rank South African medical schemes

The data, weightings and editorial guardrails behind our monthly scoreboard — explained without jargon.

Independent · Editorially reviewed

Our scheme rankings combine six weighted criteria, refreshed quarterly. Partner schemes never get a ranking boost — partner status is disclosed inline on every row and table.

01

Our data sources

We use a combination of CMS-published annual scheme reports, audited financials, scheme-published contribution tables, in-house broker premium quotes, and verified member ratings collected through our review platform.

02

The six criteria and their weights

Price competitiveness (20%), hospital network breadth (20%), claims experience (20%), coverage breadth (15%), member satisfaction (15%) and digital experience (10%).

03

Editorial guardrails

Partner status never moves a score. Sponsored placements are clearly labelled. Editors who hold the scheme being reviewed must recuse themselves from the score.

04

How often the data is refreshed

Scores are recalculated quarterly. Contribution tables are refreshed within 30 days of scheme publication. Member ratings update continuously.
